How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your Word Count (use the Word Counter tool if needed).
- Set your Speaking Pace in WPM — 130 is average, 150 is TED Talk pace.
- Read the Speech Duration and pace category.
- Use the By Word Count tab to add a pause buffer percentage.
- Use the Speaker Types tab to see how the same text sounds at slow, average, fast, and auctioneer speeds.
Formula
Base Duration (seconds) = (Word Count ÷ WPM) × 60
With Pause Buffer = Base Duration × (1 + Pause% ÷ 100)
Total Session = Speech Duration + Q&A Time + Setup Time
Example
2,000-word speech at 130 WPM with 12% pause buffer: Base = 923 sec (15 min 23 sec). With buffer = 1,034 sec (17 min 14 sec). Add 10 min Q&A + 2 min setup = ~29 minutes total session.
Frequently Asked Questions
- The average conversational speaking pace is 125–150 words per minute (WPM). Public speakers typically aim for 130–150 WPM. TED Talk speakers average approximately 163 WPM. Slow, deliberate speakers pace at 100–110 WPM. Auctioneers can reach 200+ WPM.
- At a typical 130 WPM pace with a 10% pause buffer, a 10-minute speech requires approximately 1,170–1,300 words. At the faster 150 WPM TED Talk pace, a 10-minute talk would need about 1,350–1,500 words.
- At 130 WPM (average pace) with a 10% pause buffer, a 1,500-word speech takes approximately 12 minutes 42 seconds. Without any pause buffer (pure reading time), it takes about 11 minutes 32 seconds.
- For professional presentations, 130–150 WPM is ideal. Below 110 WPM can seem hesitant. Above 165 WPM risks losing the audience. For complex technical content, aim for the slower end (110–130 WPM). For motivational talks, faster paces of 140–155 WPM convey energy.
- Yes — add 10–15% to account for natural pauses, emphasis pauses, audience reactions, and transitions. A speech that reads in 10 minutes will typically take 11–11.5 minutes when delivered naturally. Also add time for Q&A, housekeeping announcements, and technical setup.
