How to Use This Calculator

Enter your current grade (percentage), the final exam weight (how much it counts), and the desired final grade. The calculator shows the minimum score needed on the final.

Formula

Needed Score = (Desired − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) / Final Weight

Example

Current: 85%, Final weight: 20%, Want: 90% → Need 110% on final (not achievable)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Enter three values: your current grade percentage (the average you have earned so far on all non-final work), the final exam weight (what percentage of your final grade the exam counts for — e.g., 20 if it is worth 20%), and your desired final course grade percentage. The calculator applies the formula Needed = (Desired − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight to find the minimum score you need on the final exam. All values should be entered as percentages, not decimals.
  • If the calculator returns a score above 100%, your desired final grade is mathematically impossible given your current standing and the exam weight. For example, if you have a 60% current average and the final is worth only 20%, achieving a 90% final course grade would require (90 − 60×0.80) / 0.20 = (90 − 48) / 0.20 = 210% on the final — clearly impossible. In this case, lower your target or investigate extra credit opportunities with your instructor.
  • Final exam weight is the fraction of your total course grade that comes from the final exam alone. If your syllabus says "Final Exam: 30%," enter 30. If all other assessments together make up 70% and you have a current percentage on that 70%, use 30 as the final weight. Some courses use a final project, a cumulative exam, or a portfolio — whatever is left to complete, its weight as a percentage of the total course grade goes into this field.
  • Use the formula: Needed = (Desired − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. Plugging in: Needed = (93 − 92 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (93 − 69) ÷ 0.25 = 24 ÷ 0.25 = 96%. So you need a 96% on the final to reach 93% overall — a very achievable target given your strong current grade of 92%.
  • Yes — calculate your weighted average for all completed coursework (quizzes, midterms, homework combined, weighted by their respective point values or percentages). Enter that weighted average as your "current grade." Then enter the remaining final exam weight as it appears on your syllabus. The formula works regardless of how many assessment categories your course uses, as long as you correctly calculate the weighted average of everything completed so far.
