How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the total tip pool collected during the shift or week.
- Enter each employee's hours worked.
- Use the By Position Weight tab to factor in role seniority.
- The Professional tab handles credit card fee deductions with FLSA compliance guidance.
Formula
Employee Share = (Individual Hours / Total Hours) × Tip Pool
Position-weighted: multiply hours by role weight before dividing.
Example
Pool $300. Server 8 hrs (w=1.0), Busser 6 hrs (w=0.5): weighted total = 8+3=11. Server = 8/11 × $300 = $218.18. Busser = 3/11 × $300 = $81.82.

- No. Under the 2018 FLSA amendment, employers, managers, and supervisors are prohibited from keeping any portion of employee tips. Only employees who customarily receive tips (servers, bussers, hosts) may participate.
- Yes, in most US states employers may deduct the actual cost of credit card processing from tips before distribution, but the deduction cannot reduce tips below minimum wage.
- A common restaurant split: Servers receive 100% weight, bussers 50%, hosts 40%. These weights are applied to hours worked to determine each group's proportional share.
