Formula
Semester GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / Σ(Credits)
Example
A (4.0) × 3 credits + B+ (3.3) × 3 credits + A− (3.7) × 4 credits = 12 + 9.9 + 14.8 = 36.7 points / 10 credits = 3.67 GPA
Frequently Asked Questions
- Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum all results, then divide by total credit hours. Grade points: A=4.0, A−=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B−=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C−=1.7, D=1.0, F=0.0.
- No. Pass/Fail courses do not count toward GPA calculation — they show on your transcript but contribute no grade points. Credits count toward graduation but not GPA.
- Most universities require Cum Laude 3.5+, Magna Cum Laude 3.7+, and Summa Cum Laude 3.9+. Requirements vary by institution — check your school's registrar.
