How to Use This Calculator

  1. Fill your tank completely and reset your trip odometer.
  2. Drive normally until your next fill-up.
  3. Enter the Miles Driven from your trip odometer.
  4. Enter the Gallons Used at the pump.
  5. Enter the current Gas Price to see your total fuel cost and cost per mile.

Formula

MPG = Miles Driven / Gallons Used

Cost per Mile = (Gallons × Gas Price) / Miles Driven

Example

You drove 300 miles and used 10 gallons at $3.50/gallon.

  • MPG = 300 / 10 = 30 MPG
  • Total Cost = 10 × $3.50 = $35.00
  • Cost per Mile = $35 / 300 = $0.117/mi

Frequently Asked Questions

  • MPG (Miles Per Gallon) = Miles Driven / Gallons Used. Fill your tank, drive until nearly empty, refill and note gallons used and miles driven.
  • Average new cars get 25–35 MPG combined. Hybrids achieve 40–60 MPG. Trucks and SUVs typically range from 15–25 MPG. Electric vehicles are rated in MPGe.
  • Maintain steady speeds, keep tires inflated, reduce idling, use cruise control on highways, and keep up with maintenance such as air filters and spark plugs.
  • City MPG reflects stop-and-go driving, which uses more fuel. Highway MPG reflects steady highway cruising, which is more efficient. Combined MPG averages the two.
