How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the number of Beats Counted and the Time Elapsed in seconds.
- Read your BPM and Italian tempo marking instantly.
- Switch to Note Length to Time to convert any BPM into note durations in milliseconds.
- Use the Professional tier for a complete table of all note values including dotted notes, triplets, and recommended delay times.
Formula
BPM = (Beats ÷ Seconds) × 60
Quarter Note (ms) = 60,000 ÷ BPM
Dotted Eighth (ms) = Quarter Note × 0.75 — commonly used for slapback delay settings.
Example
You count 32 beats in 15 seconds: BPM = (32 ÷ 15) × 60 = 128 BPM (Allegro). At 128 BPM: Quarter note = 468.75 ms, Eighth note = 234.4 ms, Dotted eighth = 351.6 ms.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Count the number of beats over a timed interval, then multiply by 60 and divide by seconds elapsed. For example, 32 beats in 15 seconds = (32/15) × 60 = 128 BPM.
- Allegro means "fast and lively" in Italian and corresponds to roughly 120–168 BPM. Other common markings include Andante (76–108 BPM, walking pace), Moderato (108–120 BPM), and Presto (168–200 BPM, very fast).
- A quarter note in milliseconds = 60,000 ÷ BPM. At 120 BPM, a quarter note = 500 ms. An eighth note = 250 ms. This is essential for setting delay and reverb times in music production.
- House music typically runs 120–130 BPM, Techno 130–150 BPM, Drum and Bass 160–180 BPM, and Trap 130–160 BPM with half-time feels around 65–80 BPM.
