How to Use This Calculator
- Enter start time (hour, minute, AM/PM) and end time.
- The calculator handles overnight automatically — if end is before start, it assumes the next day.
- Use Multiple Intervals tab to sum 3 separate time periods.
- The Professional tier adds decimal hours, % of day, and work hours minus lunch.
Formula
Elapsed = End Time (minutes) − Start Time (minutes)
Convert AM/PM: PM hours (except 12) add 12; 12 AM = 0; 12 PM = 12.
If elapsed is negative, add 1440 (minutes in a day) for overnight.
Example
Example: Start 9:15 AM, End 2:45 PM → 9:15 = 555 min, 14:45 = 885 min → Elapsed = 330 min = 5 hours 30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Enter your start and end times with AM or PM. The calculator converts both to 24-hour format, subtracts to find the difference, and handles overnight crossings automatically.
- The calculator detects overnight crossings (e.g., 10 PM to 6 AM) and adds 24 hours to the end time, giving the correct elapsed duration across midnight.
- Use the Multiple Intervals tab. Enter up to 3 separate start/end time pairs (in 24-hour format) and the calculator sums the total elapsed minutes.
- Decimal hours = Total Minutes ÷ 60. For example, 5 hours and 30 minutes = 5.5 decimal hours. This format is commonly used for payroll and billing.
- This shows what fraction of a 24-hour day the elapsed time represents. For example, 6 hours elapsed = 25% of the day.
