How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your tank shape (vertical cylinder, horizontal cylinder, or rectangular).
  2. Enter the dimensions (diameter, height/length).
  3. Use the Vertical Cylinder or Horizontal Cylinder tabs to add a fill level for current volume.
  4. Switch to Professional for steel weight, fill time from pump rate, overflow capacity, and sensor placement height.

Formula

Vertical Cylinder: V = π × r² × h

Horizontal Cylinder (partial): A = r²×arccos((r−d)/r) − (r−d)×√(2rd−d²)

Rectangular: V = L × W × H

Gallons = Cubic Feet × 7.48052 | Liters = Cubic Feet × 28.3168 | Barrels = Gallons ÷ 42

Example

Example: Vertical cylinder, 6 ft diameter, 10 ft tall. Volume = π × 3² × 10 = 282.7 ft³ = 2,115 gallons = 8,008 liters = 50.4 barrels. At 5 ft fill: 1,057 gallons (50% full).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Volume = π × r² × h, where r = radius (diameter ÷ 2) and h = height. Multiply cubic feet by 7.48052 to get US gallons, or by 28.3168 to get liters.
  • For a horizontal cylinder, use the circular segment formula: Area = r²×arccos((r−d)/r) − (r−d)×√(2rd−d²), where d = fill depth. Multiply by length for volume.
  • One US oil barrel = 42 US gallons = 158.99 liters. This is the standard measurement used in oil and gas industry calculations.
  • This calculator is designed for industrial, agricultural, and fuel storage tanks — vertical/horizontal steel cylinders and rectangular containment. Pool volume calculators typically handle irregular shapes like L-shaped or lazy-river pools.
  • Fill Time (minutes) = Remaining Volume (gallons) ÷ Fill Rate (gallons/minute). Enter your pump's flow rate in the Professional tab to get this calculation automatically.
