Frequently Asked Questions
- Multiply length × width in feet to get square feet, then divide by 43,560 to get acres. Formula: Acres = (Length × Width) ÷ 43,560. For example, 200 ft × 300 ft = 60,000 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 1.378 acres. For non-rectangular parcels, break the land into triangles and rectangles, calculate each piece separately, and add the areas. If you have GPS coordinates for the corners, GIS software can calculate the area precisely. For a quick check: 1 acre ≈ 209 ft × 209 ft square, so a parcel significantly smaller than that is under an acre.
- One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet, 4,840 square yards, 0.4047 hectares, or 0.001563 square miles. This unit traces to medieval English agriculture, where it was the area a team of oxen could plow in one day. For reference: a standard American football field including end zones is about 1.32 acres. A typical suburban lot is 0.2–0.5 acres. A square acre would measure approximately 208.7 ft × 208.7 ft. - For a right triangle or a triangle where you know the base and perpendicular height: Area = (Base × Height) ÷ 2. For example, a triangle with a 200 ft base and 150 ft height = (200 × 150) ÷ 2 = 15,000 sq ft = 0.344 acres. If you only know the three side lengths (not the height), use Heron's formula: first calculate s = (a + b + c) ÷ 2, then Area = √(s × (s−a) × (s−b) × (s−c)). - Measure all four sides and one diagonal (dividing the quadrilateral into two triangles). Apply Heron's formula to each triangle separately and add the results. For example, a lot with sides 100, 120, 90, 80 ft and a diagonal of 140 ft: triangle 1 uses sides 100, 120, 140; triangle 2 uses sides 90, 80, 140. Calculate both areas and sum them. The Irregular tab in this calculator does this automatically. For very irregular lots, a licensed surveyor's plat drawing or GPS survey provides the most accurate area.
