How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the room length and width in feet.
- Select your carpet roll width (12 ft or 15 ft).
- Results show square feet, square yards, and number of roll pieces needed.
Formula
Area (sq ft) = Length × Width
sq yd = sq ft ÷ 9 | Roll pieces = ceil(Room width ÷ Roll width)
Add 10% waste for cuts and seams
Example
Example: 15 ft × 20 ft room → 300 sq ft → 33.3 sq yd (+ 10% = 37 sq yd). 2 pieces from a 12-ft roll.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Measure your room length × width in feet to get square footage, then divide by 9 to get square yards. Add 10% for waste and cuts.
- Carpet has traditionally been sold in square yards in the US. Divide your square footage by 9 to convert to square yards.
- Standard carpet rolls are 12 feet wide. Some premium carpets come in 15-foot widths. This affects seam placement in your room.
- Measure the tread depth + riser height for each step (typically 17–18 inches total), multiply by stair width, then multiply by number of stairs.
- Yes — padding is sold separately and typically matches the square footage of the carpet area. Add 10% for waste on padding too.
