How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the wall length and wall height in feet.
- Select your brick size (standard, modular, or queen).
- Results show bricks needed with 5% waste plus mortar bags required.
Formula
Wall area = Length × Height
Bricks per sq ft depends on brick size and mortar joint (approx 6.75 for standard).
Bricks = Wall area × bricks/sq ft × 1.05 (waste)
Example
Example: 20 ft × 8 ft wall with standard bricks → 160 sq ft × 6.75 × 1.05 ≈ 1,134 bricks and ~9 bags of mortar.
Frequently Asked Questions
- For standard bricks (8×2.25×3.625 in) with a 3/8-inch mortar joint, you need about 6.75 bricks per square foot of wall face area.
- A 3/8-inch mortar joint is standard for most brick work. Thicker joints (1/2 inch) are sometimes used for rough-face bricks.
- Roughly 7–8 bags of Type S mortar mix (60 lb) are needed per 1000 standard bricks, depending on joint thickness.
- Standard bricks are 8×3.625×2.25 in. Modular bricks are 7.625×3.625×2.25 in (slightly shorter). Queen bricks are 9.625×3.125×2.75 in.
- Cutting bricks for corners, openings, and edges causes unavoidable breakage. 5–10% extra is standard practice.
