How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the average referring domains and average DA of top-10 ranking pages.
  2. Enter your content quality score (1-10).
  3. Results show KD score, difficulty band, and achievability.
  4. Use Extended tabs to compare 3 keywords side-by-side.

Formula

KD = min(Avg_Backlinks/2, 50) + Avg_DA x 0.5
Easy: 0-30 | Moderate: 31-60 | Hard: 61-80 | Very Hard: 81-100

Example

Avg backlinks = 50, avg DA = 45: KD = 25 + 22.5 = 47.5 (Moderate).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • KD is based on the backlink profiles and domain authority of top-10 ranking pages. Simplified: KD = min(backlinks/2, 50) + DA x 0.5. Ahrefs, Moz, and SEMrush use proprietary algorithms with similar inputs.
  • KD 0-30: Easy. KD 31-60: Moderate. KD 61-80: Hard. KD 81-100: Very hard. Target KD below your domain authority level.
  • Search intent classifies what users want: Informational (learn), Commercial (compare), Transactional (buy), or Navigational (find a site). Matching content format to intent is critical for ranking.
  • Long-tail keywords typically have lower KD scores, higher conversion rates, and clearer intent. New sites often rank on page 1 for long-tail terms while struggling with competitive head terms.
